“Na Na Me Na Opera” - Approximately translated as “Askew Opera” or “Diagonal Opera” - The new 18th album from Coppé (“The legendary Godmother of Japanese Electronica”) is a 6 piece meditation inspired by three traditional operatic standards that have inspired Coppé, vividly re-imagined and expanded on through traditional Modular synthesizer Electronic music production in collaboration with the likes of Hataken (Japan’s foremost acclaimed Modular Synth producer) and veteran US producer Daedelus (Ninja Tune / Brainfeeder Records).
Arguably Coppé’s most refined and finely-tuned release to-date, further inspiration came at the unfortunate passing of Coppé’s mother in spring 2019, as acknowledged by a haunting tribute to both Mama and the iconic Klaus Nomi with Coppé’s own interpretation of ‘Cold Song’ - a traditional Henry Purcell piece, which put Klaus Nomi in the spotlight with his own legendary version back in the early 80s. ‘Cold Song’ also features live-audio recorded from Mama’s cremation service, making for a touching and haunting tribute.
For all its potentially heavy and traditional inspiration & source material, Na Na Me Na Opera is a beautiful and sprightly ambient celebration of where tradition meets contemporary reflection, making for one of 2019’s most unique album releases, in addition to a very special place in Coppé’s prolific 24 year catalogue.
