For his ninth solo album, Polish-born / New York-based experimental sound artist, producer, musician and vocalist Derek Piotr’s usual highly adventurous explorations in drone, noise-art, folk music and beyond were temporarily set-aside following the unfortunate passing of the artist’s Grandmother in 2018.
Piotr turned to his extensive archive of touching and often humorous discreet audio recordings made from voicemails from his Grandmother, and during light-hearted conversation between the pair over the course of many years.
Letting these recordings lead the way, Piotr developed these memories around sentimental orchestrations and arrangements for organ, violin, viola da gamba, piano, harp, keyboards, glass marimba and saxophone, all delicately pieced together with his most sensitive electronic drone work and production to date.
Initially independently released digitally and on CD via Piotr’s own DPSR label in spring 2019, Bit-Phalanx Music invited Derek to join their 2019 Cassette Store Day campaign for a deluxe re-issue of ‘Avia’ with revised artwork and an exclusive new bonus track, ‘Underlying True Yearning’.
